Airport currency exchange in Australia
Exchanging currency at the airport has a reputation for bad rates — and at many providers, that reputation is deserved. At Prosegur Change, you get the best exchange rate and 0% commission when you book your travel money online and choose airport branch pickup — so the usual airport markup doesn't have to apply to you. This page covers what's worth knowing before you exchange currency at an Australian airport, plus a quick guide to our two airport branches.
Why book online for airport pickup specifically?
Booking online and selecting an airport branch for collection is how you unlock the best exchange rate and 0% commission with Prosegur Change. It also means your currency is set aside and ready when you arrive, and — particularly for less common currencies — guarantees stock that a walk-up visit can't.

Practical tips before you fly
- Order online at least a few days ahead if you need a less common currency — airport branches can't always guarantee walk-up stock of everything.
- Check your order confirmation for the exact collection window, especially if you're flying at an unusual hour.
- If you're travelling with a mix of cash and card, only exchange what you're likely to need in cash — leftover foreign currency can be exchanged back to AUD at any of our branches when you return.
- Bring valid photo ID (passport or driver's licence) to collect any order, airport or otherwise.
- If your flight is delayed and pushes your arrival outside standard hours, check whether your branch offers after-hours pickup (Brisbane Airport does, via 24-hour collection on online orders; Melbourne Airport is open 24/7 regardless) before assuming you've missed your window.
FAQs about Airport money exchange in Australia
Whether it’s your first time exchanging money at an airport or you’re a frequent flyer, here are answers to the most common traveller questions.
With most providers, exchanging in town ahead of time gets a better rate than at the airport. With Prosegur Change, you get the best exchange rate and 0% commission by booking online and choosing an airport branch for pickup — so exchanging at the airport doesn't cost you anything extra, as long as you book online rather than walking up on the day.
Orders range from a minimum of $200 to a maximum of $6,000 AUD equivalent per transaction.
Yes — if your trip involves more than one country, you can include multiple currencies in the same order rather than placing separate ones.
A valid passport or driver's licence, the same as at any of our branches.
For commonly held currencies, a walk-up exchange on the day is usually fine. For less common currencies, we'd recommend ordering a few days ahead to guarantee availability rather than risking a same-day shortfall before a flight.
At Brisbane Airport, yes — online orders can be collected 24 hours a day thanks to our partnership with Brisbane Airport. At Melbourne Airport, the branch itself operates 24/7, so this isn't an issue either.
