Fiji dollars can be hard to find once you've left the airport queue in Nadi, and harder to sell back once you're home. Ordering online before you go lets you take exactly what you need, pay when you collect, and pay 0% commission on the exchange.
If your holiday is a single resort on Denarau or the Coral Coast, you'll put most of it on the room bill and a card. Step outside the resort and Fiji runs largely on cash: local buses, market stalls, small shops, village visits and the boat crews who get you between the islands.
Where you'll need cash in Fiji
The further you travel from the main resort strip, the more cash matters. Local buses and carriers (shared trucks) take cash only and cost a few dollars per trip. At the municipal markets in Nadi and Suva, fruit, handicrafts and bundles of yaqona (kava root) are paid for in notes and coins. In the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands, smaller resorts and homestays often ask for cash for drinks, activities and transfers, and card machines can go down when the connection drops.
If you're invited to a village, the custom is to bring a gift of yaqona for the sevusevu welcome ceremony. You can buy it at any market for a modest amount, but only with Fijian dollars.
On card payments, many Fijian businesses add a surcharge for Visa and Mastercard, sometimes several percent, and American Express is accepted far less widely. Since 1 August 2025 Fiji's standard VAT rate has been 12.5%, down from 15%. Resorts and hotels may add other taxes and service charges on top, so check whether a quoted price is inclusive.
How many Fiji dollars should you take?
Because FJD is difficult to change back outside Fiji, aim for a measured amount rather than a large one. A traveller staying mostly in resorts and paying meals by card might take FJD 300 to 500 for a week to cover tips, markets and transport. If you're island-hopping, staying in budget accommodation or travelling on local buses, budget closer to FJD 100 to 150 a day in cash. You can top up at ATMs in Nadi, Denarau, Lautoka and Suva, but they're scarce on the outer islands.

Ordering FJD with Prosegur Change

Fijian banknotes and coins
The Fijian dollar replaced the Fijian pound in 1969 and is divided into 100 cents. Banknotes come in FJD 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. Since 2013, the notes and coins feature Fiji's native plants and animals rather than the British monarch. Coins are 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, FJD 1 and FJD 2. The 1c and 2c coins were withdrawn in 2014, so cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5 cents.

Combining Fiji with another trip
Fiji is often paired with a stopover elsewhere in the Pacific. If your trip continues to New Zealand or via Hawaii, you can order US dollars in the same transaction. Any Fiji dollars left over can be brought to a branch, where we'll tell you whether we can buy them back.
FAQs about Fiji Dollar (FJD)
Rarely. A few resorts quote prices in Australian or US dollars, but everyday transactions are in Fijian dollars. Paying in another currency usually means a poor improvised rate.
Not as easy as major currencies. Few exchange providers outside Fiji hold FJD, so buy-back rates tend to be less favourable. It's best to spend your FJD before leaving, keeping only what you'll need for the trip to the airport.
Tipping isn't part of Fijian culture and nobody will expect it. Many resorts have a staff Christmas fund at reception, which is shared among all employees. It's a good alternative if you want to say thank you.
You must declare cash of FJD 10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies, when entering or leaving Fiji.
Sometimes, but don't count on it. Connections are unreliable on smaller islands, and some resorts and homestays only accept cash or charge a surcharge for cards. Take enough FJD for the island part of your trip before leaving the main island, Viti Levu.
